Russco bearing shaft....can it be removed?

After getting a reply from tubesforever regarding how to polish a bearing shaft, I went home to check out my platter / bearing. I believe the platter is cast then machined aluminum. The bearing shaft, however, looks like some kind of steel. The problem is I can't see how the shaft and platter can be separated. It looks like they are one piece. Can anyone elaborate on this?
