To be honest I never spent much time playing with the Ortofon Arm and SPU because I found a cartridge/arm combo I like better overall.
Adjusting the spring may work but in my mind I thought it was more to help take the weight off of the counterweight hanging on the rubber suspension more than anything else.
Maybe your arm is different than mine but playing with the spring doesn't move the counterweight in or out. Just up and down now that the rubber ssuspension is saggy so I don't see how that's a proper counterbalance adjustment.
