A tedious but very effective method is to wipe on the finish. I use a half and half mixture of polyurethane and tung oil but straight polyurethane should also work just fine. Just wipe on the finish and then wipe it clean and let it dry. You may want to buff lightly with 0000 steel wool between coats. Each time you end up leaving a very thin but nearly perfectly uniform coat of finish. It take a lot coats to get sheen but the result is better than you can get with a brush or sprayer.Good luck!
