Suggestions

While working on my birdseye maple plinth for a Lenco, I sought the help of an old-school woodworker on this issue. He suggested the following: Orient the sides facing the ceiling; slowly brush in one continuous stroke the side you are working on using a fine bristle brush - "Purdy" brand; use light coatings on brush to prevent runs and pooling; finally, he suggested only 3 - 4 coats to bring out the grain while not giving the work a plastic appearance. Then lightly sand with wet sandpaper. When I asked how lightly I wet the sandpaper, he laughed - wet sandpaper he said is never wet for wood applications only for metal work. That's why my wood projects usually look like sh*T.... Anyway, the grain of the wood really shows!
