You need a caliper gauge....

Just an inexpensive cheap plastic one is all you need to measure the ball.

As for polishing the main bearing. Check yours. It might already be polished. My Thorens were highly polished bearings.

I pressed the main bearing from the aluminum platter. The I put this in a lathe to measure the run out. The Rek O Kuts use a finely machined steel 1/2 inch bearing. You can see the high and low spots of the machining.

By measurement the bearing will be say 0.4981 to 0.4982. We run a polishing tool looking similar to a very large dremel. Use a hard cotton polish wheel. I use the green compound to cut. This is used to polish gold and platinum jewelry to high luster finishing. We turn the lathe at 600 rpm and then run the polish wheel on a jig against the shaft. Bring everything down to the low measurement and your bearing is now straighter and will have less friction.

Then press the bearing back on and you are done.
