It's a diy turntable using a Thorens TD150 platter, bearing and motor based upon a concept I drew a few years ago. I was pleasantly surprised that someone actually looked at the images and then decided to build it.However now he's thinking about a diy Teres. Perfect, I'd say.
Idlers and massive plinths. Yes, it's about the mass of the plinth acting as an acoustic energy sink. In other words the vibes travel out and away from the resonating chassis into the plinth. This helps to keep those various mechanical vibes away from the stylus/groove pick-up. Ergo, lower noise floor, better details heard. Now the idler is competitive with belt drives in terms of s/n ratio and surpasses them in terms of rhythmic drive and dynamics.
