A tale of three Stooges...

as in Iggy Pop and the...
Got three copies of Raw Power; 1997 CD remaster, 2006 Sony/BMG vinyl reissue, and a mid-1970's PC32111 Columbia.
The CD is awful, it's been compressed and boosted to the point that digital clipping is everywhere. Sounds like an LP with groove damage.
The 2006 Sony/BMG is better but still lousy. "Search and Destroy" is not only earsplittingly harsh, there's a weird effect that occurs everytime Iggy's vocal comes in, almost like the vocal is being boosted. Ig sings a line, the volume drops. He sings another line, the volume jumps up, stops singing, the volume drops again.
The other songs are a mixed bag. "Gimme Danger" isn't too bad, but "You're Pretty Face Is Going To Hell," and "Raw Power" will make you crank the gain down in a hurry.
Now, I'm not going to try to convince you, friends, that the PC32111 copy of RP is a great-sounding album because it's far from it. It's still harsh in places and murky in others. But it's not too bad at all, and it's good enough to make you want to turn it up!
Best of all, it was cheap, I think I paid around $6 before shipping from Ebay for a VG++ LP.
If you dig the Ig and crave a decent copy of Raw Power (the Stooges best album IMO) then grab an old KC or PC.
BTW, when did Columbia switch from the K prefix to the P prefix?
