XXX Record Cleaning. Not for the feint of heart.

Well, it's pretty much soapy water :-) Distilled water (as it contains fewer, if any, impurities), and a surfactant - which, if I understand it correctly, breaks down the surface tension of the water. There are numerous surfactants, sometimes referred to as 'wetting agents', but I find a few drops of Ivory Snow to a quart of water can work pretty well.

Alternatively, isopropyl alcohol and a surfactant should dissolve most of the gunk in the grooves, after which you can flush it out with distilled water. The basic point to remember, I suppose, is that you want to get stuff OUT of the grooves, so don't use anything that leaves or adds stuff IN the grooves.

Search the boards for 'record cleaning' and you should find numerous recipes.
