on the New front, it's either that or

As far as the 'New' choices go, it's the Rega style of beltdrive --small motor, thin belt, light uni-plinth, monocast tonearm ... just got a good review from SPhile this month, but does need specific siting measures. As is mentioned somewhere down the page.

Or, the Technics Sl-1200x style, direct drive --heavy duty table, more refined fit/finish than entry beltdrives, interchangeable headshell & Vta-adjustable.... longstanding classic dj table.

Both about $400, give or take.

Without having a lot of experience with used table assessment, or the time/inclination to invest there before you get your record collection, either of the above seem like good choices.

Either one can also most likely be turned over again, in a year or two, for slightly more than half what was paid for it. If you get the impulse to upgrade or move on. Save cartons & paperwork to make that a breeze.

One caution is against jumping into one of the millions of Sl1200's on ebay. These often enough exhibit speed-drift by the time they get to ebay, and it's a complex electronic fix, something that generally negates the cheap initial price.

But a brand new rega p1 or tech sl-1200 in the under-$500 range with starter cartridge should keep you very happily spinning for a few years to come.

Don't forget some record-cleaning accessories & fluid.

Good luck,

JD
