Re: TT for a beginner

My first recommendation, IMHO, is to be prepared to spend more than $200. Sure you can find a project on ebay. It will take time, patience and likely more money to get your table up and running.

Second, if you do buy used be prepared at the very very least to buy a new cartridge and belt if it is a belt drive.

I too a few months back got the itch to get back to vinyl after my lps sat unused in my basement for years. Researched quite a bit and decided to go looking for a good deal on a used Dual CS 5000. Long story short. $265 for a working table with no electronic or mechanical issues. Finish was okay on walnut plinith, but wanted to refinish it. That cost time and $8 for danish oil.

Had no way of knowing if the mounted cartridge was going to cause groove damage or play ok. $90 on an AT440MLa and I have a very serviceable cartridge. Took the time to figure out how to mount it myself. Bought the manual for the table, another $10.

But we're still under $350 and I think I have a very nice musical table for a music lover. Sounds like your vinyl is going to be free. Don't sell yourself short on your table only to be chasing an upgrade a few months from now. There will be other recommendations and there are a lot of decent tables out there. I just think you're being a bit unrealistic trying to get this done under $200 unless you are willing to buy a project and bring it back to life yourself.

HB
