Link Wray is God

The late Link Wray never got the fame he deserved. Wray more or less invented the power chord and came close to inventing heavy metal in 1958 with "Rumble." Link was hugely influential; no less than Pete Townshend said "if it hadn't been for Link Wray and 'Rumble,' I would have never picked up a guitar." I saw Link perform in NYC a few times in the '80s, when he was in his late 50s. Even at that age, the rail - thin Wray dressed in his signature leather pants and jacket was not only still a killer guitarist but the coolest guy in the city.

The best Link compilation is perhaps the 2CD Mr. Guitar set that came out on Norton Records about 10 years ago and unfortunately seems to be out - of - print now. Mr. Guitar had all of Link's Swan recordings, a 28 page booklet, and the first pressing came with one of Link's guitar picks as a bonus! OK, it's not vinyl but it's definitely worth seeking out. Norton has a lot of other great Link stuff in print though. There are 5 LPs (as cheap as $9!) and eleven 45s. Norton also reissued the berserk Girl Can't Dance single by DC rhythm and blues screamer Bunker Hill backed by Wray. Norton's Billy Miller accurately described the record as "Girl Can't Dance? She's lucky if she can hear after one spin of this platter!"
