XXX Record Cleaning. Not for the feint of heart.

Preamble: Interesting, isn't it, that your friends, who traded in their turntables for a new cd player back in 83 suddenly confess to having stacks of vinyl in the cellar when you mention you've been transferring some of your favorite albums to the confuser for uploading to your iPod?

One 'friend' brought me a pile of Diana Ross albums (at least they weren't Barry Manilow or Dawn albums) and asked me, sweetly, while batting her eyelids, to make cd's out of them.

I gave them the distilled water/'surfactant' treatment. Most cleaned up quite nicely but one refused all efforts to shed its grunge. I nicknamed it Pigpen. More crackle than a frying sausage - quite unlistenable. Casting an eye over my bathroom cleaning supplies for something more, er, powerful, I spotted it. The perfect solution for really filthy records! Sweating slighty, I applied it in pure, undiluted form, gave the disk a light finger massage, rinsed very thoroughly (under the bathroom faucet - I told you this wasn't for the feint of heart)then vacuumed it dry (Don't ask - you don't want to know)

Result? An almost silent record - the only remaining noise came from surface scratches. Not only silent, but Diana sounded much clearer.

The perfect solution, you ask? Mr Clean Ultimate Orange.

Now, I haven't carried out any double blind tests, or run any statistical analyses, or done anything remotely scientific to be honest, but I did get a fine recording off the album. So I'm happy with it. Smells nice, too

True, it is only around 3 bucks a bottle (maybe proportionately less for a BIG bottle at Sams Club) and the label isn't handwritten in Hobbit. So you might not want to leave it sitting next to your modded TD124 for your friends to see. But if you have a seemingly no-hoper album you might want to consider trying it. You can always wait 'til 2am and sneak into the basement....
