Home Vinyl Asylum

Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

Sundazed, and 4 Men With Beards are part of the Rhino Group.

I own several Sundazed LPs. The vinyl is flat, quiet, cutting and mastering is excellent. None of the Sundazed LPs I have exhibit any sibilince or weird quirks.
However (there's always a however) when it comes to actual sound quality, I think they're at the mercy of the master tape they use. If the master was well-preserved, then the LP will sound just fine. If not, oh well.
I recently picked up the Stooges self-titled debut, Fun House, Back In the USA and High Time by the MC5. Other Sundazed albums I already had are the Monkees Headquarters, and the Fireballs Torquay and Gunshot!
I have an original copy of Headquarters for comparison and the Sundazed suffers. The pressing itself is much, much better and quieter than original Colgems, but the music is thin-sounding and lacks range.
I don't think the sonics on the MC5 albums are all that great either. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. I've never heard an original Atlantic of either, though.
The Stooges and the Fireballs albums are quite good. I saw a post in the VA Archive of a TAS list for best-sounding rock n roll albums and both Sundazed Stooges albums were on that list.
Again, the caveat--I've never heard an original pressing of either album, I'm simply judging them alongside other albums in my collection.
Here's something else to consider--a quick check of Ebay turned up a first-pressing Elektra copy of Fun House at $75 with several days left in the bidding. The Sundazed copy is $15 and it sounds quite good.
I like Sundazed and 4 Men With Beards. I won't hesistate to buy any of them if the original is rare enough to make it difficult to find and/or prohibitively expensive.
I just wish they'd issue those Dylan albums in stereo.
