Shostakovich is usually very seriously portrayed, and it does reflect the mood of the USSR WWII and post War time period culture and society there.It is true that many esp. older generation musicians were pictured as serious to represent "serious music." I don't think that is true nowadays. In fact, many musicians are now fusion or crossover folks, perhaps not always to my preferences (I'm old).
Google image someone like Janine Jansen or Sarah Chang (link to her playing) or Yo Yo Ma even. The picture is an example.
