Re: adopted a Cat, Now how to keep kitty off the TT? !!!

Pavlovian Conditioning Your Cat 101:

To keep my cats away from sensitive items in the house I train them using a simple compressed air can (the kind to clean computers with):

1) When the cat goes near your TT, etc, spray the can. The sound alone should scare the crap out of even the fiercest of beasts. Be sure your cat sees the can you are holding, as they will (with some brief training) equate the "can" with "acoustic pain". This is the same feeling I get with a poorly recorded vinyl.

2) After this, place the can near your TT. Eventually, they will learn not to go anywhere near this can (and the can-pain object conditioning should stick).

BTW - This method works great for those cats that are resistant to the water guns. Tested on my 30 pound Maine-Coone cat too!
