I have this set up and did not have the trouble you describe; I used the supplied OL disc. I have never even used a separate light to read the strobe. I just have an indirect incandescent bulb that lights the room and that was enough to see the strobe (it's not the best but it does work. Mel's response below was exactly what I what I was going to say. Other than reading the wrong set of dots I can't think of anything else.
