In Reply to: Do original 60s Archiv LPs sound THAT better than 70s reissues? posted by ParloFax on April 29, 2007 at 05:57:34:
Simple answer: no.Long answer: I have 2 copies of the Mass in B minor with Richter - one is the earlier pressing with just black cursive font words on the box. The later one is a reissue with a massive picture stuck to the front. They sound identical.
Ditto for my copies of Kirkpatrick's Well Tempered Clavier Book1 - once again I have the black cursive font version and a copy that is part of a great "Bach series" set (blue boxes). They sound 100% identical.
All in all, Archiv pressings, while being nice and heavy, aren't especially known for their SQ. Look to Living Stereos and some early ASD pressings for that. Harmonia Mundi seems pretty consistently good for me as well.
