You don't have to use a step-up transformer, but the cost of a good MC stage is right up there. I've used step-up transformers, head amps, and MC phono stages, and I prefer a good MC phono stage. Presently, I'm using a Pass Labs XOno, which actually handles MM and MC. Previously, I had a Mark Levinson No.28 with MC only phono stage. The MC phono stage in the Mark Levinson was topnotch and only cost an additional $500. I often thought of simply buying the circuit board, installing it in my own enclosure and powering it with a batteries.Anyway, I prefer low-output moving coils connected to an active MC phono stage. I discovered them 25-years ago and I haven't switched back to MM. I bought a Shure V15VxMR a couple of years ago just to find out if I still preferred moving coils, and I did.
Best regards,
John Elison
