Ping Mosin, Tubesforever et al re: idler noise reduction

Howdy,

I have the L-34 with a custom plinth made of 6 layers of 3/4" burch plywood and mdf. The common recomendation. I'm embarrased to admit that I didn't realize that my Rek O Kut didn't have the (is it pabst or papst?) motor. My idler is pretty quiet, but not as quiet as my Technics. Am I delussional to think that I could get it as quiet as my Technics. Its becoming more of an issue because my wife is pregnant (read that to mean requires a lot of nap time) and I've gone to using my headphones more. I got a pair of Sennheiser HD 600s and really like them. One complaint about them is that they pick up a lot more surface and background noise than my speakers. They are great for cd but suffer slightly with vinyl. My dad always had the stereo on when I was a kid and I really loved it. Even considering, I'll probably give the kid a break in the beggining and be on the headphones for the next couple years. I'd like to do whatever I can to reduce the idler rumble.

I've got the nitride ball tubes recomended on the way. I'm investigating machines shops for the micro polish he suggested as well. If I can't find any, I may take tubes up on his generous offer to do it for me. I bought the table from the poster Tubav. I don't think he's registered but he contributes somewhat regularly. He's a very nice and helpful guy. He said he was pretty sure that he flushed the motor before he sent it, but wasn't sure. I don't know if that means relubed to so I probably need to do that. The motor is pretty loud but you really don't hear it much in the music, unless using my headphones. By that I mean if you are in a quiet room with nothing on but the table, you will hear the motor very dominantly, but the noise doesn't come through in the music much. You will hear it between tracks, but thats about it. The idler wheel seems to be in very good shape. Like I said, the rumble through the speakers aint that bad at all.

Is there a good resource out there that details how to service 50 year old idler motors. Any other jewels of wisdom I could benefit from in this issue.

Anyway, I appreciate any thoughts you have on how to reduce rumble.

Thanks for your help!

Nate
