Our little cat Jello is extremely intelligent and sociable. He wants to be in the middle of everything I do, no matter what it is, and he's almost totally fearless. Yelling at his doesn't work, loud noises don't work.
We bought spray bottles thinking that a quick squirt of water would keep him in line, but he loves getting squirted and will actually hold the nozzle between his front paws and aim it into his mouth.
Listening time was the worst. He can tell the difference between LP and CD; he NEVER bothers me when I'm listening to a CD, but he knows damned well that I'll have to pay attention to him if he goes after the turntable.
In the end, I gave up and just closed him out of the room.
