They use phrenolic as risers between intakes and carburators in race engines....it helps isolate the carburator from the heat from the intake manifold. I agree phrenolic can take a lot of heat.But you did not say how to apply the heat and the idea of someone using a butane torch or something more crude hits me as the least favorable option.
The two screwdriver approach works in seconds and creates the fewest chances for problems.
