Not just groove noise but marked distortion of the sound."I usually cannot tell unless the record is really, really worn and all it looks flat and not shiny. I have an old London PS 139, blueback--the Sousa Marches record with Grenadier Guards of London which is the record I played as a child of age 9 or so. It still plays but is worn off and scuffed. I got a new one on ebay for cheap but wound up dropping it and scratching one band :((
I am not speaking about scratches. Pops and ticks can occur on absolutely pristine appearing records and the whole side might play on somewhat scratched ones.
