Any period, most any lineup, on any label, Basie was the mark of excellence. I never get tired of that band. And to this day it remains one of the only "ghost" bands worth going out of your way to hear, particularly if they are featuring a singer like Marlena Shaw or Freda Payne. Probably due to the timeless writing of Hefti, Thad Jones, et al, but also to a conception, an approach to music, that will never get old.And I'm pissed I don't have that particular Verve disc; I'll have to look for it...
