There still should be some "room tone"...

in well done digital recordings of musicians performing in a live space. I would say the real culprit here is multi-miked recordings made in acoustically dead recording studios.

By the way, I've seen software on versiontracker that will add vinyl noise to digital recordings. :D

My only other comment is that when my tinnitus flairs up, record surface noise may be enough to mask it somewhat.
