Many things can cause a vintage tube preamp to act the way you describe.

Old wax sealed paper coupling caps (or any 40 year old cap really) can go leaky once warmed up. Marginal 12AX7's? I have experienced your symptoms (sounded ok for a side or two then sucked!) with an Eico HF-85. It was cured through a re-cap job (the tubes tested super). Some of the carbon comp resistors in the phono section were replaced also.

It helped the fidelity all around.
