From all the information I have read on the Russcos, it seems that this is normal. Mine does the same thing. I just completed my plinth for my Studio Pro B last weekend and what I did was to recess the top plate into the plinth to where the top of the plinth is even with the bottom edge under the speed selector. You cannot tell that there is a slight gap in the middle of each side. Look for yourself.
