I can't really tell you how Stereophile might class the phono section of the SP16. I find their classifications somewhat misleading because often it seems that where a product is ranked can depend on whether or not a superior product exists within a manufacturer's line-up, as opposed to the products merit relative to the other components in the stereophile rankings. The phono section of the SP16 is extremely good however. If you can find Ken Kessler's review on the ARC website, it is quite positive:"So far, so good: a painless pre-amp with a helluva fine phono section. Even allowing for the need for medium-or-higher output cartridges, the phono section has plenty in the way of dynamic range, with a low noise floor, a freedom from tube artifacts and lots of speed. Transparency matched that of the line sections, so it's clear that ARC paid extra attention to modernizing the phono section to appeal to 21st century ears. It's worth noting, however, that the transparency is of so high a calibre that you will notice the intrusion of a step-up--extra leads not the least part of the compromise--so SP16 owners will probably gravitate toward high output cartridges by natural selection."
I use my SP16 with a Music Maker III cartridge, but I can't speak to the issue of tonearm compatibility with your set-up.
