Used Turntable: How to check stylus/cartridge condition?

Well, I'm new to the vinyl side, got my first turntable: Music Hall MMF-5. It been used for just a few months before me, and it looks pretty clean and in great condition. The only thing I'm not sure is how do I check the stylus condition? Just by listening for distortions/innacuraties? Any tips on how to spot possible issues?
