Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

I've been experimenting with Benz Aces...

..both the medium and low. THis is on the 12 gm. eff. mass Technics tonearms. I switched to headshells that were stiffer and weighed 3 grams more...taking total mass of headshell/cart/fasteners to 19.8grams vs. 16.8 with the stock technics headshell. (I now have to use the auxillary counterweight to get balance) This dropped my res. freq to about 8 hz laterally, (measured with the HFN test tracks) and really couldn't detect any vertical res, but I will assume it was similar.

Although mathematically I have taken the resonance below the theoretical target, the sound has improved slam and focus. I am deciding wether I like this or not. On overly-hot passages or shouting vocals it can be a bit strident sounding, but the the overall improvement and focus makes me think I'll probably stay like this for a while. THis is ,however, the reason I am building a Cornet 2 this weekend....hoping the tubes will help tame the stridency.

THe Benz' cart have a dynamic compliance figure of 15. My advice would be to try adding about 2 grams to your cart and see what you think. I didn't suffer any collapse of the soundstage or sibilance issues. I've never had any issues tracking any kind of warps... I don't suspect anybody with MKII or better technics arms does. Be sure to let us know what you think.

Scott T.
