The real issue here is production. If you do water jet cutting of slate, the cutout for the armboard becomes the armboard. There is no way to couple the armboard to the rest of the plinth, or increase mass, without massively increasing costs. Thus you have the Slatedeck design. In fact, the only real mass at work is on the top plinth, i.e. the 30mm top section, coupled to the motor unit. The bottom plinth is cosmetic.Jonathan
