last year I had two turntables offered to me. One was an Garrard 401 with SME 3012 arm (bugger no cartridge) and the other was a Rola Professional. I paid the chap US$200.00 and couldn't get out fast enough but as I was leaving I spotted a Commonwealth Electronics sitting on the ground behind his counter and asked him if it was for sale. As ii turned out I was given it because it did not work. when I got home I decided to see if I could get it working and decided to pull the platter first and what I noticed bought a smile to my face. These idlers are meant to have a light smear of oil on the bearing as the platter sits on two ball bearings, one on top of the other. What some idiot had done was pack the well full of grease and stopping the platter from turning. Cleaned it out and the rest is history. If you ever come across these tables that are not working make sure you check the well as sometimes it can pay off in a big way.
