There were at least three different "quad" formats for vinyl: QS and SQ (some sort of matrixed quad-effect) and CD-4 (compatible, discrete). The latter encoded "true" four channel information via a stereo-compatible multiplexing scheme not unlike FM stereo. CD-4 required exceptional HF response (to ca. 50 kHz), catalyzing the development of then-esoteric line-contact stylus configurations (e.g., Shibata) which are still popular today!At any rate, all were meant to be compatible with your lowly two-channel :-)
