Cart (AT440MLa) skipping question

I have a Russco Studio Pro Model B TT w/a Syntec S220 tonearm and an AT440MLa cart. The 440 is known to be a super tracker, and on my SL1210mkII TT it flawlessly tracks virtually everything I throw at it. With the Russco, however, the 440 will skip, not frequently but occasionally, and usually with records that are a little rode hard. When I check where the skip occurs, it's usually during the first two tracks and usually the result of a micro-miniscule piece of gunk (usually dirt or micro-debris from needle drop/scuff) that won't faze or even be audible on my 1210. I usually can remove the gunk carefully with a #10 silk pin and magnifying glass, once I can find it, which takes care of it, but the disparity between the two tables concerns me a bit.

A few more details re Russco set up:
> I checked VTF and it's set on the high side of recommended range @ ~1.5g.
> Alignment is good, but mounting distance is a bit long for the S220. To align with null pts (don't remember if it was baerwald, lofgren B or stevenson that I got to work) cart is pretty much at the end of the headshell.
> S220 tonearm has no anti-skate adj
> Platter mat is std felt used with Russco tables
> Plinth is 4-sided, 7.75"H, 3/4" birch ply that sits on a 3/4" MDF isolation platform
> I clean all my records with an RCM once, then use audioquest CF brush b4 play.

Is it the mat, the mounting distance, the plinth, other, that's the difference between the TTs? Opinions, suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim
