My experience differs. Posters below indicated they never buy a brown newer Angel.I have old silver angel/Red label Angels pressed in England with and without a side dowel, often mono, but some stereo, and they do sound good. But I have a couple now in both the silver/red and brown labels. I really don't hear a huge difference, except the brown ones are on thinner vinyl. Surfaces are good on all. I was shocked when I picked up about 6 brown Angels in perfect condition at the local SA and they played like my own collection even without wet cleaning.
My family owns a significant number of light blue Angels from the 60's and 70's, and they vary. Some excellent to very good, often not as good as EMI.
I happened to have a EMI ASD and domestic Angel of a very good LP, the Melodiya recorded Bizet-Shchedrin Carmen Ballet (links and pic), and there is little difference in general sound with the EMI ahead in clarity and cleanliness.
So, I don't hear huge systematic differences. I have tried to hear them. Maybe my ears or system is too poor to tell. But I doubt that.
