Paraffin was a byproduct of crude oil refining. It isn't really a wax, just a mixture of high molecular weight alkanes which froze out of the refining process. If you use even higher molecular weight alkanes you get a stiffer product known as microcrystalline wax. If you use lower molecular weight alkanes you get vaseline.Mark Kelly
