Hmm, I don't think it will effect speed as the platter is driven directly by the idler, and the only torque applied to the tapered joint is the reluctance of the bearing to turn (which should ideally be very small :-))I have just tapped them out as well, but I did strike one that was a bit stubborn, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks.
