armboards

My original aluminum arm board is about 3/16 thick; using materials of 1/4" or so hasn't posed a VTA problem for me. I'm currently using a piece of 1/8" cherry that is stood off from the top plate by six little bits of dynamat, thinking that I wanted to minimize contact between the armboard and turntable. This got rid of the last bit of mechanical noise that I had! Underneath, the cherry is laminated with pieces of 1/4" birch ply and acrylic that are just a bit smaller than the two cut-out openings in the turntable's top plate. I think it's my final keeper with the current arm (AT 1005 Mk II).

Previously I've used 1/4" generic and birch ply, birch ply veneered with another wood, walnut (this one started as 1/2" stock, milled so that it was only 1/16" thick above the turntable top), maple, and cherry. I thought all were good, and compared to the aluminum one I thought they represented a less colored sound. I sent you an e-mail off-board with some additional thoughts...

Jim
