It took me a really long time before I understood Charlie Parker. For years, I was reluctant to get into him, thinking that he was super-complex and required a greater understanding of music in general and jazz in particular to listen to properly. And then one day, I bought this record, realized who he was playing with, and then said "Oh -- I get it. Parker just *swings*.
I know -- I'm slow.
This blue label Royal Roost, LP 221, is in pretty good shape. The players are Charlie "Chan," Miles Davis, J.J. Johnson, Max Roach, Duke Jordon and Tommy Potter. Every song is under three minutes long, but they all smoke.
