I agree with you. I used to be one of those purists who didn't even want tone controls in his rig. Too much circuitry ruined the sound, etc. If you couldn't hear the bass, well that was just a lousy recording and there was nothing you could or should do to fix it.
That's silly. We listen to music for enjoyment, so why not tailor the sound to make listening as enjoyable as possible.
I don't hesitate to use the tone controls if necessary. In fact, one of the most useful controls found on most post-1980 receivers is the variable loudness control.
