Maybe you have a later pressing or something.
Seems to me, if anything the mix is hot. Stewart's voice is close-miked and saturates the master tape.
But the instruments hit with a wallop. Bass especially, but also the drums.
Mandolin comes through beautifully, too.
It almost sounds to me like all of the tracks from Every Picture Tells A Story and Never A Dull Moment were recorded at the same session.
TAS chose Gasoline Alley as one of it's all-time best-sounding rock albums. I'm almost ashamed to say that I've had a copy for several years and have yet to play it.
