If you're going to get the cleanest sound with the best separation the stylus should be as close to 'perfectly perpendicular' to the record groove as possible. If the tonearm won't move, the advice many have offered here about shimming the record up or down works ( if you can't raise the bridge, lower the river ) but be careful: what you use to adjust the height of the record can and will effect the sound. So you might hear a difference when the record is raised but it could be that the shim is simply adding it's own flavor to what you hear, distorting the results.
