If it's a late model Yamaha, chances are you have no phono stage. That is a separate internal amplifier to bring the tiny cartridge signal up to a level that your power amp can handle it. If you are not inputting the TT into a LR that is labelled phono but rather something like aux, that's your problem. There are many fine low cost phono stages to put in the chain to match your TT with your electronics.
