Re: You're asking the wrong guy. :-) (nt)

Hi Pete.

Check out the following links:

http://www.vandenhul.com/artpap/phono_faq.htm#a2

http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/tonearmcartridge.html

http://www.cartridgedb.com/tools.asp (use the calculator top left - 1g. for fasteners/screws).

Take note that certain manufacturers (like Denon & Audio Technica) specify compliance @ 100Hz which is not very helpful. What we want to know is the dynamic compliance @ 10Hz.

Some examples:

Denon DL-110: 8 (x 10-6 cm/dyne) @ 100Hz = 15 (x 10-6 cm/dyne) @ 10Hz.
DL-160: 10/100Hz = 18/10Hz.
DL-103: 5/100Hz = 9/10Hz.
DL-304: 14/100Hz = 26/10Hz.

So double up the 100Hz specification & subtract 1 or 2 depending on how high a compliance. But most cartridge manufacturers specify the compliance @ 10Hz.

Cartridge compliance:

High: 20+
Medium: 15
Low: 10-

Tonearm effective mass:

High: Audio Technica AT-1005 II (20g.)
Medium: Rega RB250 (12g.)
Low: SME Series III (5g.)

SME 3009 Series II: 12.5g. (the non-"improved" version with metal knife-edge bearings).
SME 3009 Series II S2 Improved (detachable headshell): 9.5g.
SME 3009 Series II Improved (fixed headshell): 6.5g.

Be wary that there are limits to how heavy a cartridge the Improved versions can balance (with their standard counterweight). See Fig. 2 @ Analog-Classics' SME page.
