Re: Thread vs. Tape drive

You're unlikely to see the differences with a strobe disc, they're too transitory for that. You'll hear them, if at all, on leading edge transients. A belt that slips and/or stretches allows these to soften. A non-slipping, less elastic belt maintains platter speed better and provides more lifelike transients and dynamics. This is why idler and direct drives tend to be more pacey and dynamic than belt drives.

As I moved to quieter, more speed stable motors, tape's advantages in stability and power coupling became more audible while the cost in transmitted motor noise and cogging effects became less so.

The other components in the system must be sufficiently transparent for this to matter. If one is using slow, soft or romantically rounded cartridges, speakers, electronics or even wire, belt differences might well remain inaudible.
