I tend to agree with Tightwad in that it is the music itself that has the PRaT

That seems to be the difference between good music and mediocre IMO. I speak as a drummer with 35+ yrs experience. It is the pace, rhythem and timing that set the mood for the music. Many musicians have the ability to pull off tone, melody and harmony. But music is somewhat like a motor. You may have all the ingredients in there, but if the timing is off, it doesn't run smooth.
Timing is a very interesting thing also. It doesn't have to be fast to have punch and drive. John Bonham was the epitome of drive, yet in the timing area, he was most often retarded. By that I mean that if you look at timing in the same fashion as timing the cylinders in an automobile, the mark is regulated off of top dead center. Bonham was often 1/32 behind TDC, yet because of the interaction of the musicians and the arrangements, it always worked. Maybe the biggest problem in playing his style is to do it without it being rushed and with the intense drive. Today many try to use speed in place of real drive. IMO, that is synthetic.
That being said, what we are really talking about is a subtle nuance in the music. But it is the nuance that gives the music its feel and sets the mood IMO. Therefore there may be some equipment that is better at picking up those subtlties than others. But that is that gist of the audiophile system anyway, isn't it? The picking up of the subtle nuances that the over the counter equipment won't do, make this hobby what it is. Somewhat expensive, maybe overpriced, but worth the price when it moves you to say....Wow!
