I had a well-tempered classic several years back, and especially admired the arm. I think it is much better than the rb250 or rb300 which I have also owned, and well worth your time to repair. It sounds like your arm has already been rewired. I believe the stock tonearm comes with a terminal box and you must supply your own rca cables. Pictures would be helpful.
"Do I have to solder the RCA plugs to get a good connection?"
Yes, I would recommend soldering. A digital volt/ohm is invaluable tool.
"Do I need to rewire my tonearm? Is there likely sand or something else in the tonearm that would make it hard to pull cable through the tonearm?"I believe the arm has sand packing. Yours may not if it has been rewired. I would just try soldering the rca's before attempting a re-wire. I like neutrik pro-fi rca's.
"I sent an email to Well Tempered Labs to see what they charge for upgrade or repair."
Try a phone call. The email response is notoriously poor.
Good luck.
