I'm working with several of these tables right now.

The spring only needs to be strong enough to positively return the motor to the fully out position, if you pull it inward - then release it. It's a very fine spring on the motors I have seen.

You should replace the rubber/brass motor mount bushings, and clean & lubricate the three white plastic shoulder washers that are used for the motor mount glides - get all of the old grease off of the washers, off of the plate, and out of the sliding grooves.

I used a 90% silicone plumbing grease to lubricate the sliding parts. It doesn't attack any of the parts, and it should be stable over time. I'm sure there are better lubes for this.. medium-light body teflon grease, for example.
