For all the talk around these parts touting Technics and SME, IMO You have mase a WISE choice! The 398 with the EMPIRE 980 tone arm will do any thing these others will ever hope to IMO.
The 980 arm is a medium to medium high mass arm and is VERY compatable with a MM or MC cartridge.
I'm not sure anyone has an arm that is a better tracker. Sonics are also SUPERB.
The small spring you are reffering to is going to be a rare find, however you can find one at a hardware and cut to length and reshape the ends to fit with small nose pliers. The exact tension isn't overly critical. It mostly needs anough elasticity/strech to maintain/allow belt tension when changeing speeds.
I have bought/sold plus fifty EMPIRES in the last several years and currently have eleven of them, some of every model made.
My favorite for accurate transcription is the 398. Fit it with an M97XE cartridge and sit back and enjoy!
Sorry I do not have an extra spring.
Regards,
Darrell
