newbie here...i just got a rega p2 (with glass platter) last week (one of the last remaining ones in stock apparently). i purchased this from vladimir at north country audio (great guy by the way with impeccable customer service). i'd heard great things about the p2 (for entry level) and was thoroughly excited to get my table. vladimir installed a goldring 1006 cart and i got a grado ph-1 phono pre amp off audiogon to go with it. i'm only about 5 or 6 hours into the cart, but i have to say, i am underwhelmed.to me it seems like i am listening to a cd. it's not what i expected at all. my previous rig consisted of a dj grade stanton str8-80 direct drive with built in phono stage and a stanton al-500ii cart. to this setup sounded dare i say better and more analog. maybe it was the lack of detail and muddied midrange that added to the "Warmth". Perhaps it was the inherent distortion of that rig. the rega p2/goldring on the other hand sounds hollow in the middle. the highs are crsystalline and the detail is great, as well as imagiging and soundstage. the bass is a little weak and the midrange, to me seems like its gone into hiding. overall it's a very clinical, analytical sound, not the prototypical analog warmth i was expecting. full disclosure, i am listening to this through my ht setup while i am putting together my 2 channel rig. this consists of a pioneer vsx-1015tx reciever (in direct mode for music) powering an energy take 5.2 system with and m&k subwoofer. now granted this isnt the best system for 2 channel listening, but this was the same system that played warmer with my stanton.
perhaps the goldring is just a bad match for my system. it maybe too bright with an already bright pair of speakers and possibly bright amp.
perhaps the goldring just hasnt had a enough break in time.
any advice?
