I have an Alphason Opal and I took the plunge on a 103R. My current cartridge is a Grado Platinum, but I think its published compliance is 20cu, yet I get resonance on HFNTR at 13hz which indicates my arm weighs less than a gram! Hence, I don't know what my effective mass is or the true resonance of the Platinum. (The tonearm database says Opal's effective mass is 9 grams, the manual says 13 grams.)I plan to put a 3 gram bronze coin on the headshell, along with 1 gram or so of Blu Tack to hold it. This should ensure that the arm will be in the <13 Hz range and still allow me to use my stock counterweight.
I'll let the folks know how it sounds. I am planning on using a cinemag step-up at 150 loading. I'll later try 100. Cinemag is behind in manufacturing so I have a wait awhile.
